Irish ... BCS Bound!

Wow. Didn’t think that game was going to be as close as it was … ESPN already has it posted exactly right: “Notre Dame fans, breathe.” Notre Dame 38, Stanford 31. ND: one missed extra point (that almost was the difference of the game) and two missed field goals. Ouch. After Stanford scored a touchdown to go up 31-30, Brady Quinn drove the team down the field in less than two minutes, ending with a touchdown run by Darius Walker.

What a great win – now we can enjoy the rest of the weekend and look forward to see ND in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day. Go Irish!

Wasting Away

Just wasting some time while we wait for the last big game of the regular season … kick-off for the ND-Stanford game is not until around 8PM tonight, so I found some time to sit in front of the computer today. I updated the graphic up top … just needed a change I guess. Maybe one of these days I’ll get Frontpage and really start spicing up things. That'll take some time though ... so wait and see.

In the meantime, be sure to check out our “cool wright stuff” page – I just added our top ten all-time favorite tunes. Remember the story about the music tastes of W? Well, these are some of our favorites … as they stand today of course. Just thought I’d get them out there.

Oh yeah, speaking of music, just recently bought “Barenaked for the Holidays” by the Barenaked Ladies (“BNL” for the kids). Since I have never owned any Christmas music, I thought it was about time. And why not start with one of my favorites groups (they made my top ten)?. I think this BNL Christmas CD was released last year, but hey, it should be good. Also just purchased “The Vanity Project” by Steven Page (lead singer of BNL) … certainly not as good as your everyday BNL, but okay. The only track I really like is No. 2 – “Wilted Rose.” When I played it for Dale, he guessed it was BNL before Steven Page even started singing, so I guess this CD does still have the same sound as the ladies. Sounds like Page is back with them recording a new album now … looking forward to that being released.

Thanksgiving Note

Well, Thanksgiving Day is officially over but we are still hanging on to what is left of the holiday weekend – including the sweet flowers that Mom sent from Montana. Dale mentioned today how when you’re a kid, Thanksgiving seems so far away from Christmas; but now that we’re older, Christmas seems like it is right around the corner – we better get shopping! Nevertheless, we enjoyed our Turkey Day here at home – enjoyed seeing West Virginia take it to Pittsburgh last night. Today, we caught some of the Texas vs. A&M game at Hooters. We couldn’t bear to do any shopping on Black Friday, but we still managed to make it out of the house and enjoy the great weather. Oh yeah, ran in the “Turkey Trot 5K” at work on Friday and finished in 26:00 … not too bad for having stood around 30 minutes in the cold weather before the 7AM race. Dale said he was there in spirit ;)

Wanted to make sure that I reported that No. 1 West mounted a comeback, took state AA title, defeating No. 2 Helena Capital 21-17 a week ago tonight. What a great victory – way to go Bears!

Now, tomorrow in football, Notre Dame takes on Stanford in the Irish’s last game of the season. After an ND victory, looks like the guys are headed to the Fiesta Bowl. We were hoping they would be in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta or the Orange Bowl in Miami (both a little closer to home) but everyone is predicting otherwise. What a year Weis has had – they’ll definitely be a contender for the national championship next year. Go Irish … beat Stanford!

That is all to report tonight … Renae out.

Go Bears

Just checking news this a.m. and looks like my Golden Bears of Billings West High beat up on our cross-town rival Senior High Broncs in football last night. No. 1 West won 35-12 and will go onto to play in the state championship next Friday. Go Bears.

While I was in high school, West football was respectable but could never reach the top. It is nice to see them finally going after a third state title since 1997. Since basketball season goes the same time as football in Montana, seems like I didn’t catch as many football games with friends as I would’ve liked. I do remember several times where we went straight from practice at the gym to Daylis stadium to catch some of those Friday night games. Ah, those high school memories ...

Hopefully the West girls’ basketball team can do some good damage this season again and capture their fourth state championship in 4 years. Go Bears.

What would we do without sports in our lives?

Playing, Driving Tennessee… and the Numa Numa Dance Craze

Hope everyone had a pleasant Veterans’ Day and took the time to think about or thank those who serve or have served to protect our country. We often take for granted things like driving freely across the country and hearing 80,000-plus sing the National Anthem in unison before a sporting event … but always take the time to reflect and remember why we have it this good.

Having said this, we are proud Americans and feel very fortunate to be able to continue our adventures in the 2005 Notre Dame college football season. Over the last week, Dale and I were lucky enough to take a little road trip to see the Notre Dame vs. Tennessee college football game in South Bend and catch some sites along the way. The drive up to Indiana includes passing through the major cities of Atlanta, Chattanooga, Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis. What a great drive, especially when driving through Tennessee (definitely beautiful country up in those “mountains” relative to Montana and Colorado of course) and Indiana when fall was in full bloom with “golden” leaves everywhere … relative to the Golden Dome of course. The whole trip was quite eventful and very tiring … we are happy to finally be home again. Nevertheless, my top five from the trip include (in chronological order):

1. Seeing the inside of The Basilica on the campus of Notre Dame. Made my eyes water.

2. Accidentally running into and getting to see the first ND men’s basketball game of the season (against mighty Lewis University) at the Joyce Center for “F-R-E-E” ... well, one free ticket anyway from a college student girl who asked everyone in line, “Hey, anyone want a free ticket?” Sure we do.

3. Touring the College Football Hall of Fame on Friday (while the Tennessee football team was just leaving), followed by a couple of beers at McCormick’s, then wings and more beer at BW3’s (again finally!). (The picture above was actually taken at the Hall of Fame.)

4. Seeing the game versus Tennessee from the end zone near the ND student section. Got to see the players run out of the tunnel and get a much closer view of Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardzija, and Charlie! We are pretty sure we are on NBC too ... still have to watch the game to verify though. Highlights of the game that you couldn’t see on television had to be the F-16 four-ship flyover after the National Anthem (made our eyes water too) and when the ND marching band played “Dragostea Din Tei” (a.k.a. the Numa Numa Dance Song) at halftime. The student section went nuts. Little did I know that this song is big with ND fans on the Internet. Apparently, every time Charlie gets a commit from a recruit, this video is posted … too funny. I had to download the tune from itunes … I am addicted to this feel good song. Listen to it … now how about you?

5. Touring the National Corvette Museum and Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on my 29th birthday (both Dale and my dad thought that that was the greatest thing ever;). The assembly plant tour was amazing. What a great American tradition. Makes you want to run out and buy a new corvette.

That’s it for tonight. Thought I had better get something posted before ND takes on Navy tomorrow. Now that is another great American tradition: Notre Dame versus Navy in college football … 79 years and running, the longest intersectional college football rivalry in the country (und.collegesports.com). Good luck Navy and thanks to you, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard for your service to our country.

And, oh yeah, did we feel the magic of Notre Dame in South Bend last weekend? What do you think?

Hangover ... Over

Well, after more than two weeks, I think Dale and I are fully recovered from our hangover caused by the heartbreaker -- losing to USC in the last seconds.

How did we help the hangover? Attend the Georgia Tech vs. Clemson football game this past weekend in Atlanta (college campus is basically downtown Atlanta). Great environment with homecoming weekend and all but not the same feeling as South Bend. Although, GT claims to have and be "the buzz," neither of us felt "the magic."

Will we this weekend against Tennessee? Wait and see.
